DIY Reusable Trash Can

Apparently, I've been in the mood to organize the car.

Last month I brought you the awesome tutorial on how to make a dog blanket for the back seat.   It's amazing!  Khloe is finally used to it, and I love that I can remove it and there's no hair in the car!  Score one for Kerstin!

Now, I need to deal with the trash situation!

I'm not going to show you the inside of our car when it's messy, because it's disgusting.  But we sometimes get in the habit of just throwing things all willy nilly and then the car turns into a dumpster on wheels.  So to give us some place to put the trash... I found a tutorial for a trash bag...

This little wonder actually has a lot of room in it.  It's cute and it's incredibly easy to make!

You can find the original tutorial: HERE.

If you don't sew, no worries... the author has an Etsy Shop where you can buy these cuties.   But if you do sew, the tutorial is really easy to follow and it takes about 30-45 minutes to whip this trash bag up.  Plus, you can just use some old scraps you have lying around, which is always a bonus!

Now, with most things, we all have a different way to do things-- and if I could go back again there were a few things I would have liked to know before putting this together.  So, I'm going to share them with you so you know before you get started.

1.  I would have sewn both layers together from the beginning.  It was kind of a pain in the ass trying to get the two layers to fit together separately, and I honestly didn't see any point to doing them that way.  Nothing had to be turned inside out.

2. Unless you're driving an SUV the length of the handle is WAAAY too long!  I had to quadruple wrap it around my gear shift to get the bag to stand up correctly.  So, measure the distance before you make this pattern and adjust accordingly.

3.  The "Peltex" is optional.  In fact, I find it ridiculous to use at all.  Basically you're making a sturdy lining for the inside of the bag so you can put a plastic bag in it.  WHY??  This is a trash bag people, and it's made of fabric so you can wash it if it gets dirty.  Just my opinion.

There you have it!  Like I said before, this was an easy project and totally worth the time if you're looking to get rid of the plastic bags in your car!
